A Transatlantic Journey – 1962 Triumph TR4 Lands At The Forge

Some cars have a story. Others have a history file. This 1962 Triumph TR4 has both.

Built in Coventry on 14th December 1962, this matching-numbers TR4 left the Standard-Triumph factory destined for a very different landscape from the one it calls home today. Dispatched to Los Angeles, California, it arrived on America's West Coast at the height of the sports car boom, where British roadsters were as much a part of the scenery as the palm-lined boulevards and Pacific highways they travelled.

First registered in California in early 1963, the TR4 would spend the next 27 years enjoying the benefits of the state's dry climate. It remains accompanied by its original California registration plate, 548 LJR, a tangible reminder of its American beginnings.

In 1990, the car returned across the Atlantic to Britain, imported by renowned Triumph specialists Brown & Gammons. Remarkably, the recorded mileage at the time was just 49,000 miles. Shortly afterwards it was acquired by Mr C. Pegler of Walsall, who embarked upon an extensive restoration programme, including a conversion from left-hand drive to right-hand drive. Completed in 1992, the work was carefully documented with photographs that remain with the car today, creating an invaluable record of this important chapter in its life.

The story continued across Europe when the TR4 was sold to Brussels in 1996 before passing into Dutch ownership two years later. After a period of limited use and careful storage, the car underwent a photographed bare-metal restoration in the Netherlands during 2006, further preserving and enhancing the integrity of this increasingly sought-after British sports car.

By 2009, the TR4 was back in the UK and entrusted to Southern Classics of Twickenham for a comprehensive mechanical rebuild. The scope of work was extensive. The engine was rebuilt with increased compression and converted for unleaded fuel, while upgrades included a performance manifold, stainless steel exhaust system, rebuilt gearbox, replacement overdrive unit, new wiring loom, steering components, cooling system and numerous additional parts. Invoices within the history file show expenditure approaching £20,000, reflecting a commitment to ensuring the car drove as well as it looked.

Today, more than six decades after leaving Coventry, this TR4 presents as a mature and thoroughly developed example. Finished in Signal Red, it retains the timeless proportions that have made Michelotti's design one of Triumph's most enduring shapes. The chrome wire wheels, shod with recent Michelin XAS tyres, complement the car perfectly, while the brightwork and detailing remain in very good order throughout.

Inside, the cabin combines period character with thoughtful craftsmanship. Tan Connolly leather seats with dark red piping are matched by coordinating trim and Wilton carpets, creating a warm and inviting interior. A Nardi wood-rim steering wheel, Jaeger instrumentation and painted metal dashboard preserve the sporting atmosphere that defined the TR4 when new.

Open the bonnet and the benefits of decades of careful ownership are immediately apparent. The engine bay is clean, well detailed and home to a Weber carburettor conversion that complements the extensive mechanical improvements carried out during the car's restoration journey.

Most importantly, this TR4 remains every bit the driver's car Triumph intended it to be. The engine is eager and responsive, the gearbox operates with confidence, and the overdrive performs exactly as it should. Equally at home on a Sunday morning drive, a European touring holiday or a classic car event, it is a TR4 that has been continually improved, carefully maintained and genuinely enjoyed throughout its life.

From Coventry to California, across Europe and back to Britain, this Triumph's story spans more than 60 years and three countries. It is a well-documented example with a fascinating provenance, extensive restoration history and the character that only a travelled and cherished classic can possess.
