1967 Triumph TR4A – Surrey Top, Overdrive, Wire Wheels and Extensive Mechanical Upgrades – £29,995

A well-specified Triumph TR4A featuring a Surrey top, overdrive, wire wheels and a comprehensive programme of mechanical improvements completed between 2024 and 2026. 

This 1967 Triumph TR4A combines traditional British sports car character with an appealing specification and extensive investment in mechanical reliability, usability and driving refinement. 

Powered by its four-cylinder engine and paired with an overdrive-equipped gearbox, the TR4A delivers the engaging driving experience for which the model is renowned. The engine performs strongly, with good oil pressure and responsive power delivery, while the gearbox operates smoothly and positively. This example features the fixed rear axle configuration rather than independent rear suspension (IRS). 

The mechanical specification has been significantly enhanced, with a reconditioned differential, new rear lever-arm shock absorbers and replacement front calipers. The braking system further benefits from new rear brake drums, splined wheel hubs, and previous replacement of the front discs, pads, rear wheel cylinders and shoes. Four Continental tyres were fitted in 2024. 

The engine and ignition systems have received particular attention. The distributor has been rebuilt by Aldon to original specification, while a Powertlite high-torque starter motor has been installed. A new radiator, overflow bottle, hoses and engine fan blade provide a comprehensive cooling system refresh. Fuel delivery is supported by a new fuel pump and replacement fuel pipes to and between the carburettors, which were stripped and cleaned in 2024. A full engine tune and service, including replacement of all fluids, was also completed, alongside a new crankcase breather pipe. 

The transmission and associated controls have benefited from new clutch master and slave cylinders, following earlier replacement of the clutch and pressure plate. The clutch was adjusted in 2024 for lighter operation, contributing to improved drivability. 

Further specification highlights include a new windscreen and surround, replacement door mirrors, new wiper arms and blades, and a Speedy Cables overhaul of the speedometer, with a new angle drive and cable. LED bulbs have been fitted to the front side lights and rear stop/tail lights, while a battery cut-out switch has also been installed. 

Exterior detailing includes new sill tread plates, a replacement bonnet badge and lettering, and a new bonnet striker and plunger with an emergency bonnet release. The boot lid was repainted in 2024.

The bodywork presents well, with a good paint finish, consistent panel fit and generally good chrome. Minor age-related marks remain, together with some patina to the rear bumper. The chassis rails and floor pans are structurally sound, with the underside treated with oil for protection. 

A Surrey top provides versatility for open-air motoring and longer-distance touring, complemented by wire wheels and a 15-inch Mountney steering wheel. The interior retains its period character, with upgraded seating, a vinyl-wrapped dashboard, original-style gear knob, new rear bulkhead trim panel and footwell overmats. Silent Coat sound deadening has also been installed in the boot floor and footwells to improve cabin refinement. 

With its overdrive transmission, Surrey top, wire wheels and extensive mechanical specification, this Triumph TR4A offers a well-equipped and highly usable example of the classic British sports car, retaining its period character while benefiting from substantial investment in the areas that matter most for enjoyable, dependable motoring.
