Coming Soon to The Forge: Exceptional Triumph TR5 PI

Later this week, we are delighted to welcome this exceptional, matching-numbers Triumph TR5 PI to The Forge, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully presented example of one of Triumph’s most desirable sports cars.

Finished in its original colour combination of Valencia Blue with Black upholstery, this particularly well-documented TR5 boasts impressive provenance, a comprehensive restoration and a series of carefully considered mechanical upgrades, making it an ideal example for both enthusiastic ownership and long-distance touring.

Supplied new by L.F. Dove Limited of Wimbledon, London, on 27th December 1967, the car was first registered on 12th February 1968. Accompanying the vehicle is a copy of its original buff logbook, documenting its early ownership history and confirming that it remained with its first owner for over 20 years.

By 2010, the TR5 was ready for restoration, and the opportunity was taken to undertake a major mechanical and bodywork rebuild to an exceptionally high standard.

The engine was fully stripped and rebuilt, incorporating a reground crankshaft, fast-road 83 camshaft, uprated valve springs and timing gear. Further mechanical improvements included a stainless-steel exhaust system and a rebuilt gearbox, upgraded with Triumph Stag internals.

The braking system was enhanced with Wilwood four-pot callipers, while Spax adjustable shock absorbers were fitted all round to complement the car's improved handling.

Recognising the TR5's potential as a capable long-distance touring car, further upgrades included an uprated aluminium radiator, a custom-built, long-range aluminium fuel tank, a new Bosch fuel pump, electronic ignition and a Kenlowe cooling fan. A hazard light switch was also fitted to assist with compliance when touring in Europe.

The body was completely restored, with the quality of the paintwork complemented by beautifully presented chrome work and upholstery. The engine bay was finished to an equally high standard, while the underside reflects the quality and thoroughness of the restoration throughout.

Having subsequently covered approximately 11,000 miles of touring, the TR5 found a London-based owner in 2024, who acquired the car for £52,000 and then invested a further £20,000-plus in bringing it up to its current exceptional standard.

Work undertaken included servicing, the installation of polyurethane bushes, detailed paintwork attention and the fitting of a new soft top and frame.

All work was entrusted to a highly regarded London-based Triumph specialist, ensuring that the car has continued to benefit from knowledgeable, marque-specific care.

Fourteen years on from its major restoration, the additional paintwork attention and recent investment have further enhanced what was already an outstanding example.

With its matching numbers, original factory colour combination, impressive ownership history and carefully selected mechanical enhancements, this TR5 represents a particularly appealing opportunity for the enthusiast seeking a beautifully presented and mechanically first-class example.
