A highly desirable 1969 MGC GT, complete with rare Downton performance upgrades and a feature pedigree in MG Enthusiast Magazine, has become available through Shropshire-based specialist The Forge.

First supplied new by University Motors Limited, London, in June 1968, this genuine UK-market, right-hand-drive example was delivered in striking Tartan Red with black trim piped in red. Its factory specification included 72-spoke competition wire wheels, overdrive on third and fourth gears, and SP radial tyres. Registered as CHV 242H on 19 September 1969, the car still proudly wears its original number plates today.

The MGC underwent restorative work in the 1980s before being acquired in 2002 by enthusiast Keith Preston, who embarked on a remarkable 17-year programme of refinements. His carefully chosen upgrades included a Downton-style triple SU HS6 carburettor conversion with K&N filters, a competition six-branch exhaust, and handling enhancements such as Superflex bushes, Spax dampers, and a quicker steering rack. A lightened flywheel and refurbished cylinder head further improved drivability.

The car was later celebrated in the January 2020 edition of MG Enthusiast Magazine, cementing its place as one of the most notable examples on the scene.

Now offered in superb condition, the MGC GT remains faithful to its period character while benefitting from thoughtful updates. It rides on freshly refurbished 16-inch chrome competition wire wheels with new Pirelli Cinturato tyres, while inside, new MGOC leather reclining seats piped in red, a Moto-Lita wood and chrome steering wheel, and discreet modern touches such as a Pioneer Bluetooth radio bring added comfort and style.

Mechanically, the car has been freshly serviced, MOT’d, and tuned by specialists Aidon Automotive, ensuring it performs as well as it looks. Out on the road, it delivers the strong, responsive, and composed drive expected of a well-prepared grand tourer.

With its unique combination of Downton upgrades, continuous refinement, and feature history, this Tartan Red MGC GT represents a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
