We are pleased to offer this restored Triumph TR3 for sale. Retaining its original steel wheels and functioning overdrive, chassis number TS/12578-L was first registered in South Africa in 1956, where it remained for almost 60 years before being imported to the UK in 2014 by its first UK owner, who subsequently commissioned a comprehensive restoration.
Originally manufactured on 14 August 1956, this TR3 was built to left-hand-drive North American export specification and finished in Salvador Blue with a stone interior and fawn hood. Factory equipment included 5.50 tyres and a miles-per-hour speedometer.
Produced by the Standard-Triumph Motor Company between 1955 and 1957, the TR3 was notable as the first British production car to feature front disc brakes as standard. Power comes from the 1,991cc four-cylinder engine producing around 100 bhp, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox with optional electrically operated overdrive. Period performance figures quoted a top speed of just over 100 mph and a 0–60 mph time of approximately 10.8 seconds. While relatively few examples remain in the UK, the TR3 proved especially popular in the USA and enjoyed considerable success in Sports Car Club of America competition.
Finished now in red, this example spent much of its early life in South Africa before being imported to the UK in 2013. Following its arrival, the then owner undertook a full restoration with the aim of returning the car as closely as possible to original factory specification. The car was completely dismantled and rebuilt, with the new reconditioned engine, gearbox and overdrive overhauled, and new brakes, fuel system components, exhaust and cooling parts fitted. The interior was retrimmed in black and a new soft top installed. The wheels were refurbished and fitted with new tyres, retaining their original appearance.
Throughout the restoration, original Standard-Triumph parts or correct replacements from specialist suppliers were used wherever possible. The work is supported by photographic records.
Since completion, the car has covered very few miles and remains in excellent condition. This TR3 represents a well-restored and properly documented example of a classic British sports car.
