We are delighted to welcome this exceptional 1959 MG MGA 1600 Roadster to The Forge. Restored to the highest standard by our friends and partners at Classic and Sportscar Centre in Malton, this car underwent a comprehensive body-off, nut-and-bolt rebuild completed in 2015, after which it has been carefully maintained regardless of mileage.

The story begins in 2014, when a US-based client set out to acquire a first-class MGA Roadster finished in Black with Red leather upholstery. His intention was to enjoy the car during visits to the UK and to embark on occasional European tours. Rather than search for an existing example, he chose to commission a car built to his exacting standards, with no expense spared. Eleven years on from completion, and having covered fewer than 3,000 miles, the result remains every bit as impressive as the day it was finished.

Upon completion in 2015, the MGA was delivered to Central London for its owner’s visit. It performed faultlessly in city traffic before touring south to Kent and then on to Norfolk, proving immediately that it was as capable on the road as it was beautiful to behold.

After that initial trip, the car was returned to secure long-term storage, where it was maintained correctly and exercised regularly. Its recorded mileage reflects careful, sparing use: just 3 miles at its first MOT in 2015, rising to 394 miles in 2016, 683 miles in 2017 and 820 miles in 2018. In 2019 it undertook its most significant journey, travelling to France to participate in the Rallye International des Remparts in Angoulême. The MGA toured through France with complete reliability, finished the rally, then drove to the north coast, crossed the Channel and continued from England’s south coast back to us, by which point the mileage had reached approximately 2,000.

Since that adventure, the car has only been removed from storage for routine road testing, a service in 2021 and a further service and MOT in 2023. Its long-term owner eventually decided to part with it simply due to lack of use. It was quickly acquired by a barrister seeking his first classic car experience. Having thoroughly enjoyed the MG, he has now opted for a larger 4x4 classic to suit growing family life, creating the opportunity we now present.

Today, this MK1 MGA 1600 Roadster remains beautifully finished and exceptionally well preserved. The bodywork is superb, with excellent panel fit and a first-class chassis. The Black paintwork retains a deep, lustrous finish, complemented by excellent brightwork and chrome wire wheels. The Red leather interior is of outstanding quality, beautifully matured yet still fresh in appearance. It is complete with full mohair weather equipment, a stainless steel boot rack and a detailed, show-standard engine bay.

Mechanically, the car is equally impressive. With fewer than 3,000 miles since its full engine rebuild, gearbox overhaul, axle rebuild and complete refurbishment of the braking, suspension and steering systems, it drives exactly as one would hope — tight, responsive and confidence-inspiring. Ancillaries were renewed, the wiring loom replaced, and every aspect addressed during the restoration to achieve a true show-standard result. Today, it feels like a freshly rebuilt example that has been properly and sympathetically run in.

Restoration agreement included :
1. Inspection and appraisal of acquired MGA Roadster Motor Car
(MGA 1600 MKI Roadster, Chassis Number G-HN-L80774, LHD North American Export, Manufactured 30.11.1959)
2. Complete dismantling and full mechanical, body, trim and electrical rebuild to original specification using new or reconditioned parts as necessary and to include the following:
3. Strip all bodywork to bare metal, replace or repair body panels as appropriate. Restore and repaint chassis as required.
4. Rebuild rolling chassis with new or reconditioned (as available) suspension, brakes and steering components, reconditioned engine and drivetrain.
5. Prepare and repaint body shell in the purchasers choice of colour (black) and mount on completed chassis. Fit with new or reconditioned doors and hinge furniture.
6. Supply and fit new wiring harness, and all electrical components including lights, horn, indicators, charging system, instruments, starter motor etc.
7. Supply and fit new carpets, seat trims and cushions, hood and all other interior trim to the purchasers specification and colour.
8. Supply and fit new chromium plated wire spoke road wheels and 5 new tyres.
9. Supply and fit (as appropriate) the purchasers choice of steering wheel and the following accessories; spare wheel cover, jack, copper/hide headed hammer for wheel spinner removal, boot mounted luggage rack, battery isolator switch, tonneau cover with central zip, and heater system.
10. Carryout wax ant-rust treatment to vehicle underbody or dinitrol treatment as the purchaser requires.
11. Carryout full extended road-test and carryout any required minor remedial work following reassembly and test.
