1974 Triumph Stag – Upgraded Four-Speed Automatic

This 1974 Triumph Stag was sold by a respected Triumph Stag specialist in 2022, at which point it underwent an extensive programme of recommissioning and improvement.

The history file includes MOT certificates dating back to 1986, when the recorded mileage stood at 32,305. These documents show steady but light use through the late 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. By 2022, the Stag had covered just 48,977 miles, equating to fewer than 17,000 miles in 36 years. The car presents as a remarkably original and honest example, which made it an ideal candidate for careful enhancement rather than restoration. Following specialist pre-sale preparation, it was supplied in 2022 at a price of £16,995.

Recommissioning work carried out in 2022 was comprehensive and included new rear springs and shock absorbers, five new tyres, new rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders, new handbrake levers, rear driveshaft gaiters, and a reconditioned water pump. Further mechanical work included new inlet manifold gaskets, a new high-level header tank, thermostat, cam cover gaskets, carburetor diaphragms and breather pipes, a new alternator belt, power steering belt, and a major service.

Additional improvements extended beyond the mechanicals, with the fitment of a high-quality new soft top, new under-bonnet insulation pad, battery holder, front wing badges, door handle gaskets, and mirrors.

Following this initial work, the car was taken to an even higher standard later in 2022, with over £8,000 of further investment. This included a highly desirable four-speed automatic gearbox conversion, costing £4,500 fitted, along with significant engine work comprising reconditioned cylinder heads and a full renewal of the timing chains, tensioners, and guides.

Since completion of this work, VNK 545M has seen very little use. It now drives extremely well, powered by a strong and healthy Triumph V8 that performs smoothly with no untoward noises. The four-speed automatic gearbox is a transformative upgrade, and with refreshed suspension and brakes the car feels composed and capable on the road.

Cosmetically, VNK 545M presents well as a clean, tidy, and honest example, featuring older but consistent paintwork and a nicely presented interior. Supplied with both a relatively new soft top and a factory hard top, it offers an excellent all-round classic package.

As it stands, this is a strong, usable Triumph Stag that can be enjoyed immediately and further enhanced if desired.

Preparation is now underway, we intend to carryout some bodywork improvements to address some minor paint blemishes, re-trim the factory hardtop lining, service and apply a fresh 12 months MOT.
