New to The Forge is this characterful and well cared for early Triumph Spitfire 4, retrospectively referred to as the Mk I.

Accompanied by its British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate, this original RHD home market car was built on 7th May 1964 and dispatched from the Canley factory in Coventry on 12th May 1964, supplied new via Herts Motors Limited of St Albans. It was originally finished in New White with a black interior. Little is known of its early history beyond the Heritage Certificate.

We acquired the car from a Shropshire-based couple who enjoyed it over the past decade, using it regularly for local events and longer UK trips. While accompanying documentation is limited, the previous owners advised that the car is believed to have undergone a sympathetic restoration around 15 years ago by a Cheshire-based specialist. During this time, it appears to have been refinished in its current deep bottle green, along with a retrimmed interior. Mechanical attention is said to have included a stainless steel exhaust, replacement rear shock absorbers, fuel tank, clutch, electronic fuel pump, dynamo, and refurbished wheels with tyres.

Today, the car presents as an older restoration. The paintwork retains a good shine, with some age-related cosmetic imperfections as expected, but no signs of rust. The brightwork shows light patina in places, adding to its character, while the interior has a gently used feel consistent with a car that has been enjoyed. The engine bay is clean and tidy, and the chassis appears straight and solid, finished in body colour. The underside is similarly presentable, with an older repair noted to the front floor pans which remains sound.

On the road, the Spitfire performs well, with a strong, willing engine, good oil pressure, and a pleasingly period exhaust note. Steering and braking are in keeping with a 1960s sports car, offering an engaging and honest driving experience.

This is an early example that has clearly been used and enjoyed, this Triumph Spitfire offers plenty of charm and character. It stands today as a straightforward, older restored car that has proven to be reliable in recent ownership and remains ready for continued use.
