We are delighted to present this very early 1962 Triumph TR4 with Surrey Top, a truly special example that has recently undergone a comprehensive, high-quality restoration.
The project has been carefully overseen by its previous owner, a successful local businessman and passionate Triumph enthusiast. Having restored several Triumph models over the years, he approached this project with the experience and knowledge that only true marque enthusiasts possess, working alongside a number of trusted specialist companies to ensure the highest possible standards throughout.
This particular TR4 spent much of its early life in Texas, USA, before returning to the UK in 2021 where the restoration began. The car had been off the road since 1977 and originated from Fort Worth, Texas. Since its return to Britain, the car has been the subject of a meticulous, nut-and-bolt restoration carried out with exceptional attention to detail, originality and mechanical integrity.
Restoration began in 2023, when the car was completely stripped down by the previous owner, removing every last nut and bolt. The chassis was then sent to Tim Welsh at The Apedale Heritage Centre in Newcastle, Staffordshire, where it was sandblasted and recoated. Following this, the inside of the chassis was treated and protected using Lanoguard.
Once the chassis returned, it was rebuilt with all new suspension components and bushes. The braking system was fully renewed with new discs and pads fitted all around, and throughout the rebuild all new bolts, nuts and washers were used to ensure the highest level of finish and reliability.
The body shell was entrusted to M&T Classics in Wombourne, where it was stripped back to bare metal. During the restoration two new floors from Heritage Parts Centre were fitted, along with a front panel which was new old stock and original. The body was then fully prepared and converted to right-hand drive.
All seams were sealed before the body was finished in etch primer and then painted in two-pack original Signal Red paint. A brand-new set of wire wheels and splines were purchased along with Michelin XAS tyres. The chassis was then delivered to M&T Classics for the reassembly of the body and chassis, during which time they carefully aligned and finely tuned all panel gaps to achieve an excellent overall finish.
The twin SU carburettors were sent to Glen Watson, a respected carburettor specialist, who restored them to as-new condition including new seals, floats and internal components. The original front brake calipers were restored by Classic Car Automotive in Chelford, Cheshire.
M&T Classics also sourced, blasted and painted the right-hand drive dashboard in ‘New White’. The original seats were re-upholstered by PJM Motors in Market Drayton, using Scottish leather with red piping, maintaining a very authentic appearance. Custom Trim Creations in Macclesfield restored the door cards and manufactured and supplied the carpets.
The rear Surrey backlight was sourced from Revival Motorsport Fabrications as an exact aluminium reproduction of the original component, supplied with new glass and rubber trims from Moss.
Mechanically, the engine was sent to Bradbury Engineering in Loggerheads, Shropshire. Here it received new pistons, the liners were re-bored, the crankshaft was reground and new bearings were fitted. The cylinder head valves were hardened and reseated to allow the engine to run on modern unleaded fuel. It should be noted that after approximately 300 miles of running, the head will require re-tightening and the tappets resetting.
An overdrive gearbox was sourced from Tony Sheach, a private TR specialist based in Northampton. The gearbox was then sent to TD Fitchett in Telford where it underwent a complete internal refurbishment.
A new wiring loom was sourced from Auto Sparks, the renowned specialist supplier. The radiator was re-cored using a high-efficiency core before being repainted and tested by Wolverhampton Radiators, a specialist classic car radiator company.
Throughout the restoration every component was either restored or renewed as required, resulting in a beautifully rebuilt example that reflects the care, dedication and passion invested in the project.
We have acquired the car during the very final stages of this extensive restoration, with only a handful of minor finishing details remaining before completion. The result is an exceptional example of the iconic Triumph TR4, restored with patience, expertise and a clear commitment to doing the job properly. The previous owner estimate that he has invested circa. £30k into the restoration project today not including his own labour costs.
