Just arrived at The Forge is a truly stunning 1960 MGA Roadster – a comprehensively restored and wonderfully detailed tribute to the golden era of British sports cars.
Beneath the bonnet lies the more powerful 1622cc inline-four Mk2 engine, producing 90bhp and delivering it to the rear wheels through a crisp four-speed manual gearbox. Although originally built as a 1500 model, this example was upgraded during its time in the USA with both a recessed front grille for improved airflow and the higher-capacity Mk2 engine, creating an authentic period-correct enhancement that subtly elevates its performance and charm.
Imported from Maryland in January 2017, the car then underwent a painstaking three-year, body-off nut-and-bolt restoration. With parts invoices alone exceeding £14,500, the work included zinc-coating the chassis, replacing the sills, door posts, and floors, a complete re-spray, a gearbox rebuild, and an extensive list of mechanical refurbishments. Every stage of the process has been carefully documented, reflecting the remarkable attention to detail lavished on the car.
Today, the MGA presents beautifully in British Racing Green, paired with a black vinyl convertible hood and a tastefully retrimmed cream leather interior, complete with green piping on the seats and light green vinyl door cards. The cream-finished dashboard is complemented by a wooden-rimmed MG steering wheel and classic Smiths dials. Freshly powder-coated 15-inch chrome wire wheels with twin-eared knock-off hubs enhance the car’s period style, while removable decals provide a subtle nod to the model’s motorsport pedigree on both sides of the Atlantic. Inside, the leather cabin shows only the lightest signs of use, with gentle creasing to the seats and just a touch of patina on high-contact points, adding to its authenticity. The hood, replaced in 2017, remains in excellent condition, and the car comes complete with side screens, a full green tonneau cover, and a spare wheel.
Mechanically, the car is in fine order. In 2020, Classic MG Services carried out significant works including engine removal and refitting, gearbox rebuild, tuning, and various upgrades such as hardened valve seats, new springs, suspension bushes, a steering rack, a new wiring loom, and a Lucas ACR alternator conversion for improved reliability. A professional right-hand drive conversion was also completed using a new dashboard supplied by Just Classics and Campers.
This 1960 MGA Roadster is a standout example of the breed: fully restored, finely fettled, and sympathetically upgraded. It exudes style, charm, and sporting pedigree, whether destined for country road touring, classic rallies, or simply to be cherished as part of a collection. It is a car that rewards ownership and delivers every ounce of the authentic British roadster experience.
Every vehicle purchased from The Forge during this period is supplied with a complete package of added value and peace of mind, including free UK delivery up to 150 miles, a three-month Autoguard Classic Car Warranty, an independent specialist inspection, a fresh DVLA MOT, a fresh service, and a professional valet and detail.
