Back to the Sands – Richard’s MG Midget Returns to Pendine

We’re always thrilled to receive updates from Forge customers, but every now and then, a message lands that reminds us just how deep people’s connections to their classic cars — and the places they take them — really go.

Richard and his wife, who you may remember from our spring blog, have been out enjoying their MG Midget again (RMB 900H), this time heading down to a stretch of coastline that holds a very special place in British motoring history: Pendine Sands.

For those unfamiliar, Pendine isn’t just a scenic beach. Between 1924 and 1927, it became the stage for a string of Land Speed Records, with legends like Sir Malcolm Campbell and Parry Thomas pushing the boundaries of what was possible on its seven miles of hard, flat sand.

Richard wrote to tell us:

"Today, RMB 900H took the wife and I to Pendine Sands... a place of significant motoring history."

He even shared the remarkable story of Parry Thomas’s Babs — a car powered by a 27-litre Liberty aeroplane engine — and the tragedy and recovery that followed. It’s a place that still resonates deeply with enthusiasts, not just because of what happened there, but because of what it represents: ambition, engineering courage, and a certain kind of British tenacity.

Of course, Richard and his MG weren’t just there for the history. The couple made a proper day of it, enjoying a picnic at Wisemans Bridge on the way home — a charming stop along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

What makes this story even more special is the photo Richard included from 1981 — the very same beach, but this time featuring his first MG Midget. Over 100,000 miles driven in that car, and even back then, Pendine was calling. Now, four decades on, it’s lovely to think of a new MG — RMB 900H — picking up the story where the last one left off.

These are the moments that bring classic ownership to life. Cars like Richard’s aren’t just for show — they’re part of our personal history, stitched into the places we love and the memories we make.

Thank you, Richard, for taking us along for the ride — past and present.
