Classic car ownership is a hugely rewarding experience. Whether it’s the smell of petrol and leather, the joy of waving to fellow enthusiasts on the road, or the simple pleasure of a summer’s drive with the window down and the radio on — there’s nothing quite like it. But it’s not without its quirks, and that’s what makes it so special.

Here at The Forge Prees, we’ve helped many first-time buyers take their first steps into the world of classic cars. Here’s our honest view on what to expect — the joys, the jobs, and everything in between.

They're Old… and That’s Part of the Fun

Remember, classic cars are old. Many were built with manufacturing techniques, tolerances, and materials that simply don't match modern standards — and that’s part of the charm. These machines have history, character, and soul, but they do need regular care and maintenance.

Expect fluid leaks from time to time, quirks in the electrics, and the occasional stubborn start. Check your oil, coolant, and tyre pressures before each drive — it’s a good habit and part of the ritual. We always recommend using a drip tray to catch any drips and help protect both your car and your garage floor.

The upside? Most classics are incredibly simple to work on. Armed with a basic tool kit, a Haynes manual, and a bit of patience, you'll be surprised what you can do yourself. Classic car manuals are often far more detailed than their modern equivalents and can walk you through many common repairs step by step.

Start Right: Buy the Best You Can Afford

One of the biggest mistakes we see is buyers jumping in too quickly. Don’t buy blind from a driveway or take a chance on an auction unless you know exactly what you’re doing. Start with the best car you can afford — not just the cheapest. A well-cared-for car with documented history will always cost less in the long run than a “project” that spirals out of control.

Buying from a reputable dealer like The Forge Prees gives you added peace of mind. All our cars come with a fresh MOT, a 3-month Autoguard warranty, and a full mechanical inspection. We also ensure every car is well-documented with a comprehensive history file.

Great First Classics

We often recommend MGs and Triumphs to first-time buyers. They’re fantastic cars with plenty of personality and exceptional parts support — particularly through suppliers like Rimmer Bros.

If done correctly, classic car ownership can be one of the most cost-effective forms of motoring. Insurance is usually very reasonable (we recommend Hagerty Insurance) and road tax is often free due to historic vehicle status. Most classics are also ULEZ-exempt.

The Importance of Routine

Unlike modern cars, classics need to be checked over more regularly. Get into the habit of checking fluid levels and tyre pressures before any run. Learn how to operate the choke — most classics require it to start from cold and need a few minutes to settle into an idle as the engine warms up. Over time, you'll get to know how your particular car behaves.

Pay close attention to the gauges — fuel, oil pressure, and temperature are the key ones. These dials aren’t always accurate, and running low on fuel can stir up old sediment in the tank, causing blockages and poor running.

MOTs, Batteries, and Storage

Although most classic cars are MOT-exempt, we recommend a voluntary annual MOT to ensure roadworthiness and give you peace of mind. A valid MOT also provides a useful timestamp in the car’s history file, showing care and diligence.

When not in use, we advise keeping the battery on a trickle charger, or disconnecting it entirely if the car is going into long-term storage. Modern batteries are expensive — a little care goes a long way. We can supply suitable chargers and car covers (both indoor and outdoor) tailored to your vehicle — just ask.

Look After the History

We take great pride in building history files for the classics we sell and always encourage new owners to continue adding to them. Keep every receipt and invoice — even small ones — as they all demonstrate the love and care your car receives. Remember, we’re just custodians of these machines for the next generation. A well-documented history file is one of the biggest contributors to a car’s value.

Part of the Family

Just like in our own family, classic cars often become more than just transport — they become part of the family. They appear in countless photographs, are present for special occasions, and create memories across generations. There's great joy in passing them on and seeing them treasured once again.

Breakdowns and Back-Up Plans

Let’s be honest — things can and do go wrong. That’s why we recommend investing in a roadside recovery membership. It offers security and peace of mind and is just as valuable as it is with modern motoring. Think of it as a backup plan, not a sign that something will go wrong.

In Summary

Classic car ownership is a wonderful, rewarding hobby. It takes patience, care, and a bit of elbow grease — but the rewards are enormous. Whether it’s the drive, the show circuit, or just tinkering in the garage, there's something uniquely satisfying about being involved with these rolling pieces of history.

This is just our view on the pros and cons of classic car ownership — and yes, we’re a little biased. But we truly believe there’s nothing better.

If you’re thinking of taking your first step into the world of classics, we’re here to help. From finding the right car, to supplying the right covers, chargers, and advice — The Forge Prees is with you every mile of the journey.

Happy motoring!
