The Forge is delighted to present what can only be described as one of the finest MGB Roadsters to pass through our doors in recent years — a beautifully restored 1971 MGB that combines outstanding provenance, meticulous craftsmanship and exceptional road manners.
This remarkable British sports car comes to us from long-term owner and dedicated MG enthusiast Mark Bark-Taylor of Holmfirth, whose unwavering commitment to excellence has resulted in a Roadster of truly exceptional quality. Acquired in August 2009 with a recorded mileage of 92,950, the MGB became the focus of an ambitious restoration programme that would span an incredible eight years.
Determined to create one of the very best MGBs on the road, Mr Bark-Taylor commenced the restoration in May 2010. The project centred around the installation of a brand-new British Motor Heritage bodyshell, ensuring the car had the strongest possible foundation for the years ahead.
The shell was painstakingly prepared, etch primed and professionally refinished in striking Tartan Red, a colour that perfectly complements the MGB's timeless sporting lines. No detail was overlooked during the build, with every cavity and box section receiving comprehensive wax protection to safeguard the car's future preservation.
Throughout the restoration, components were either renewed or expertly refurbished to the highest standards, creating a car that not only looks outstanding but has been restored with longevity and usability firmly in mind. The extensive history file includes a substantial collection of invoices and photographic documentation that records the transformation in impressive detail.
While little is known of the car's early years, the accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate provides fascinating insight into its origins. This MGB is confirmed as an original right-hand-drive home market example, built between 8th and 15th October 1970 before being supplied new to Appleyard Limited of Bradford on 26th October 1970. Finished from the factory in Bronze Yellow with black trim, the car was equipped with Rostyle wheels, heater, tonneau cover and radial tyres. Registration number JWT 331J was subsequently issued in the West Riding of Yorkshire on 7th April 1971.
Today, the MGB is every bit as impressive behind the wheel as it is to admire. The engine is strong, eager and responsive, maintaining excellent oil pressure throughout. Gear changes are smooth and precise, while the fully functioning overdrive system enhances both cruising comfort and usability.
On the road, the car feels tight, refined and confidence-inspiring — exactly as a properly restored MGB should. The quality of workmanship is evident in every aspect of the driving experience, making this a Roadster that can be enjoyed regularly as well as admired.
As the cost of high-quality restoration work continues to rise, opportunities to acquire an MGB restored to this level are becoming increasingly scarce. This outstanding example offers enthusiasts the chance to own a Roadster that has benefited from years of careful, dedicated attention, resulting in a car that is ready to be enjoyed immediately.
Whether destined for long-distance touring, classic car events, or simply cherished as part of a distinguished collection, this exceptional 1971 MGB Roadster stands as a superb example of one of Britain's most beloved sports cars.
