Every so often, a car arrives at The Forge that perfectly captures the spirit of classic motoring — and VRX 779H is exactly that. This 1969 MGB Roadster, finished in its original Primrose Yellow and trimmed in black leather with yellow piping, is a superb example of what makes the MGB such a beloved icon. It’s a car that has been restored, upgraded and cherished to an exceptional standard, offering not just show-level presentation but genuine, road-ready performance.
Supplied new to the UK market, this MGB has benefitted from decades of care and investment. Most recently, it has been treated to a 1950cc Oselli Stage II engine, built for lead-free use and tuned for spirited road driving. The engine is lightened, balanced and paired with a Weber 45 DCOE carburettor, Oselli inlet manifold, K&N air filter and a Maniflow large bore tubular exhaust system. A new clutch completes the package, resulting in a lively, responsive car that feels truly dialled-in. This is far from your average MGB – it’s one that rewards every press of the throttle with real intent.
The car’s restoration journey began in the 1980s, with records confirming a full restoration by the Potteries MG Centre in 1988. MOT certificates throughout the late eighties, nineties and 2000s reflect consistent use, but it was in more recent years that the car was elevated to another level. Prior to 2017, it underwent a second major restoration, with the body shell stripped back, assessed and rebuilt using new panels where required before being professionally repainted in its correct factory colour.
The quality of finish is immediately evident. The bodywork is arrow-straight and carries a deep shine, while the chrome was renewed and a new hood installed during the restoration. The interior was re-trimmed with great attention to detail, creating a cabin that feels fresh, comfortable and true to the car’s character. Originally fitted with chrome wire wheels, the car now sits on a set of desirable knock-on Minilights, which give it a more purposeful and sporting stance without compromising its classic aesthetic.
Underneath, the MGB is just as impressive. The underside is remarkably clean and structurally sound, a testament to the standard of the restoration work. Mechanically, the car has been brought right up to date with refreshed braking, new shock absorbers and the performance-tuned Oselli engine at the heart of it all. The gearbox is the later all-synchro type and benefits from overdrive, making long-distance motoring effortless.
On the road, this MGB delivers exactly what a good classic should. It feels eager and composed, with tight handling and a crisp throttle response. The upgraded engine brings a welcome boost in torque and performance, while the exhaust note under load adds just the right amount of character. The car rides well, shifts smoothly, and has a balance that invites confident, enjoyable driving — the kind that encourages you to take the long way home.
Presentation-wise, this car leaves little to be desired. The paintwork, chrome and interior are all of a high standard, and the engine bay, boot and underside show the same level of care and attention throughout. It is, in every respect, a properly built car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
Before it leaves us, VRX 779H will be independently inspected and professionally detailed to ensure it meets our exacting standards. It comes with a full history file and the kind of provenance that makes ownership not just a pleasure, but a privilege. This is a car that blends usability with performance, and turns heads for all the right reasons — a true classic in every sense, now available at The Forge.
