Over the years we have been asked many times whether it would be possible to install power steering upgrades to classic cars at The Forge Prees. Until recently, the answer has always been that it wasn’t something we were able to offer.
We’re pleased to say that has now changed.
Following a new supply agreement with a leading UK specialist in electric power steering systems, we can now successfully offer power steering upgrades to our classic cars. This means that going forward, customers purchasing vehicles from The Forge Prees will have the option of having a discreet, professionally installed electric power steering system fitted to their car if required.
The system retains the car’s original steering column, but with the addition of a compact electric motor integrated into the centre section. Specially machined joints are used to connect the column sections together, creating a setup that is often stronger than the original steering arrangement. The motor is securely mounted using an additional bracket, typically attached to the pedal box or bulkhead for extra strength and stability.
One of the key advantages of the system is how discreet it is. The original fittings — including the ignition barrel, steering wheel and column shrouds — are all retained, so the installation looks completely standard once fitted. Wiring and control boxes are carefully concealed beneath the dashboard, keeping the classic appearance of the car intact.
These electric power steering systems are designed with both performance and reliability in mind. Each installation is fused with a 35–40 amp maxi fuse to the motor and a 5 amp inline fuse to the controller, and all systems operate on standard 12-volt negative earth electrical systems.
Electric power steering provides a modern solution to one of the most common challenges with classic cars — heavy steering at low speeds and when manoeuvring. Unlike traditional hydraulic systems, electric power steering is maintenance free and does not rely on pumps, fluid or belts that can wear out over time. Once installed, it is very much a fit-and-forget upgrade.
Another benefit is that the vast majority of the car’s original steering components remain unchanged. Items such as the steering rack, track control arms, track rod ends and column universal joints remain standard non-power steering components, meaning future maintenance costs stay exactly as they would on a standard car.
In the highly unlikely event of a power loss, the steering simply reverts back to its original manual operation. Unlike older hydraulic systems which could make a vehicle extremely difficult to drive if they failed, the electric system ensures the car remains perfectly usable.
This upgrade offers the best of both worlds — modern ease of driving while preserving the originality and character of the classic car.
